London Aerospace and Technology College gets green light

Building work for a pioneering £11m Aerospace and Technology College will begin at London Biggin Hill Airport this autumn, after plans were unanimously given the go ahead by Bromley Council.

The London Aerospace and Technology College is led by London South East Colleges in partnership with London Biggin Hill Airport, with the Greater London Authority (GLA) contributing £6.2m for the project from the Skills for Londoners Fund. The specialist college will train the next generation of mechanical, electronic and service engineers as well as technicians and ground crew professionals.

David Winstanley, chief executive officer, London Biggin Hill Airport, says: “If the UK aviation industry is serious about tackling the skills shortage, we must find new ways to grow our own talent. The London Aerospace and Technology College is a game changer that will create a new generation of skilled aircraft engineers to meet the needs of aviation for years to come.

“London Biggin Hill Airport is proud to be the future home of a specialist college that will leave a lasting legacy, creating careers for young people across London and the South East.”

Sam Parret, principal and chief executive officer, London South East Colleges, says: “The London Aerospace and Technology College will help address skills gaps in an expanding and economically-significant sector, while providing young people with a wealth of job opportunities in an industry they may never have before considered for a career.

“We are grateful to the Council, the GLA, the airport, our employer partners, local residents and all our stakeholders for their ongoing support and their recognition of the value of this project. This is a win for the whole community.”

Approval for the college follows three years of extensive work by London Biggin Hill Airport and London South East Colleges to ensure the support of businesses and the local community, with two public consultations.

The project is supported by key employer partners including: Bombardier, London Gatwick Airport, London City Airport, University of Greenwich and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Building work will begin at London Biggin Hill Airport this autumn, with the first students arriving at the college in 2020.
