July busy for Heavy Jets, but overall trends down

There were 90,550 business aviation departures in Europe in July according to WINGX`s latest monthly Business Aviation Monitor published today (August 8).

The figure represents 2.5% fewer flights compared to July 2018, but otherwise higher than in any July month since 2006. Year to date, flight activity is down by 1.8% vs 2018. The last 12-month activity is trending down -0.8%.

Significant declines this month from Germany and the UK, also Sweden and Russia. France was the busiest market and flat, as was Italy. Flights from Spain were down by 3.3%

Most of the YOY decline this month was due to a slowdown in flights from Germany and the UK, down 6% YOY. The busiest market was France with 19K flights, a flat YOY trend. Half of France departures were domestic, this activity rising 7% YOY.

Of the other main markets for business aviation in Europe, Italy was flat, Switzerland slightly up, Spain down by 3%. Strongest growth this month came from Turkey, up 4%. The biggest decline came from Russia with flights falling 22% YOY.

Large Jet activity was down 1% this month, mainly from 6% and 3% declines in France and UK, and a 24% drop in Large Jet departures from Russia. Large Jet activity from Germany and Switzerland gained 5% YOY. From Turkey, Large Jet departures increased 17%.

Most of the decline this month came from Midsize and Small Jets, this activity down 3% YOY; -6% in Germany, -8% in UK, -10% from Spain. Mid-Small Jet activity fell 9% from London airports, and fell 15% YOY out of Paris airports.

By Mission, the biggest contributor to YOY decline came from Private/Owner flights, down 5% YOY. 20% of flights out of Russia were Private, these fell 36% YOY. Private flights on Cessna aircraft dropped 11%, and on Lear Jets, down by 29% YOY.

Charter/AOC activity was down 1% overall, and has now declined in every month since Oct-18. Bombardier and Embraer Charter/AOC activity was up >6% YOY. 78% of flights out of Turkey were Charter/AOC, these increasing 6% YOY.

Several of the larger jet segments had growth this year, Heavy Jet +6% YOY, ULR, SMJ and SLJ by smaller margins. Other segments had declining YOY activity, especially Entry Level and Very Light Jet.

Diamond Twin-Star had outlier growth this month, with growth in business jet activity coming from Global Express, Citation Latitude. Much of the decline in Private/Owner activity is coming from fewer Gulfstream GV/500-550 flights.

Airports

Busiest airport Paris Le Bourget (LFPB) saw a 2% decline in July activity and Geneva (LSGG) slumped by 10%, but Nice (LFMN) was up 2%, and Farnborough (EGLF) gained 8%; Mandelieu (LFMD) by 18%; Madrid Barajas (LEMD) by 31% YOY. Europe’s top 8 airports are all down for the first 6 months of 2019.

Richard Koe, Managing Director of WINGX, comments: “Business aviation flight activity continued to slow in July 2019, a couple of points down on 2018. Whilst this is drawing a disappointingly premature end to the recovery in regional activity which we saw in 2018, the month was still one of the busiest months on record. The impetus is coming disproportionately from the heavy metal, with super-mid, heavy and ultra-long range jets in more demand. This reflects the relatively strong growth of the active fleet in Europe at the top end of the market. The bigger jets are being deployed successfully on AOC activity, notably by the leading international operators.”
