This week . . .

The British Government has admitted no impact assessments were made on how Brexit would affect the UK’s aerospace industry. The news came from the minister responsible, David Davis, after intense grilling from the Parliamentary Brexit committee. Davis had previously said Government decisions were being made on the back of rigorous data analysis. Surprising almost no one, this is now proved not to be the case.

Fledgling charter operator, Zetta Jet, has not only failed to secure Chapter 11 financing, but now the trustee in the bankruptcy case, Jonathan King, a partner and co-chair of DLA Piper's white collar, corporate crime and investigations practice, has asked the court to change it to Chapter 7 proceedings. This will involve selling off all assets to pay back creditors.

Jet Aviation has started construction on it new 8,700m² (93,600ft²) hangar in Basel, Switzerland. Hangar 3 will replace two existing building, but be twice their size, as well as expanding the apron by 5,000m² and adding 2,000m² of offices and workshops. Once open in late 2018, Hangar 3 will be able to house several aircraft up to the size of a 747-8.

The line-up for the Singapore Air Show in February next year is growing. Organiser Experia lists Boom Supersonic, Honda Aircraft, IHSE Asia, WEARE Group and Wright Brothers Science and Technologies Development. There aren’t many firm details for the static yet, but Bell Helicopter's 505 Jet Ranger X will be on display for the first time in Asia.

GlobeAir will launch a per-seat, on-demand air taxi service next year. The company says better mobile technology that allows for easier scheduling and booking, plus growing numbers of people willing to share an aircraft with strangers, are behind the move. The service should be launched in time for EBACE in May 2018.

With increasing numbers of Millennials entering the workforce, their consumers preferences will soon begin to affect business aviation, as the Baby Boomers and Generation Xers did before them. Speaking at the Corporate Jet Investor Miami conference last week, Embraer Executive Jets president and CEO, Michael Amalfitano, said the industry needs to start thinking about how to tailor their products as services, as Millennials increasingly want “more unique choices, more customisation, more personalisation and an overall higher level of service” than previous generations.

Demand and supply for light and mid-sized business jets has finally stabilised after a “lost decade”, says Jon Raviv, a senior analyst at Citi Research also also speaking at the conference. He suggests over production of the aircraft types in the 2000s slowed recovery after the recession. But large-cabin jets deliveries are still exceeding actual demand, which will lead to their own ‘lost decade’.

Elsewhere at the conference, Duncan Aviation president, Aaron Hilkemann, warned that nearly 40% of US business jets and half of business turboprops will miss the 2020 deadline for installing ADS-B Out. Without proper installation, non-compliant aircraft will be grounded. Companies trying to meet the deadline are already finding it difficult, with shop capacity taken up with heavy demand for Datacom installation.

In related news, the FAA estimates nearly 14% of US aircraft have improperly transmitting ADS-B Out avionics. This is usually due to either improper hardware installation or incorrect configuration by avionics technicians.

Cyber security is an increasingly important issue for aviation and especially for business aviation. Satcom Direct has launched a course on the subject to warn about emerging threats and some practical solutions for protect against them. “Human error has been identified as the leading cause of cyber security incidents, and end-user education is one of the top ways to prevent network infection,” says Satcom Direct director of training Mark Mata.
